About

Based in Kyoto, Japan, Kaikado is the iconic family run company that produced Japan's first airtight tea caddies in 1875 and have been committed to perfecting the craft ever since. These traditional handmade tea canister (or chaztusu) are crafted using Kaikado’s original manufacturing process, now 130 years old, that involves between 130 to 140 steps.

The elegant design is intentionally left unlacquered, so that every time a Kaikado tin is handled it will develop a rich patina unique to each household, transforming them into heirlooms to pass down to future generations. Each tin holds 200 grams of loose tea and its airtight design will keep loose leaf tea leaves fresh for up to 1 year.

Care instructions: After you purchase you will perceive a normal yet subtle change in color tone. Copper (2-3 months), Brass (1-2 years), Tin (3-5 years). Like fine wine, chazutsus appreciate with age.

When opening, carefully lift the top of the caddy lid slowly from the body in order to prevent any possibility of damage.
When closing, adjust the joint line on the lid with the joint line on the body. This will allow the lid to go down slowly by itself and the air will be released from the caddy. Gently push the lid at the last moment. This will prevent air from entering the caddy.
