Rooibos has deep roots in South Africa where it has been consumed for generations. Originally harvested by Indigenous Khoisan communities, wild rooibos was fermented and dried to create a tisane to bring respite and nourishment to this rugged region. It evolved from local tradition to global commodity early in the 20th century, becoming a stalwart agricultural crop for the Clanwilliam district by providing an important source of stability for local farmers. Today, it is protected by designation, woven into the fabric of the origin and celebrated for being both a cultural heritage and a gift to tea drinkers around the world.

As with all teas, the terroir and makers play a huge role in shaping the soul of the offering. Our rooibos is sourced from the spartan Cederberg region of South Africa, near the town of Clanwilliam, where red bush (the colloquial name of “rooibos”) has grown wild for centuries. This remote, sun-drenched landscape produces rooibos with richness, sweetness and remarkable steadiness.

The red rooibos variety is oxidized after it is harvested (much like black tea), deepening its color and creating that familiar honeyed, vanilla-toned cup. Green rooibos, by contrast, skips that step. It’s steamed to halt oxidation, preserving a lighter, more vegetal and floral profile. We use both red and green rooibos in our Red Nectar blend to create balance and draw out the dynamic nature of this beautiful herbal tea. The green adds levity and a resiny sparkle while the red grounds it with depth and an unshakeable base.

Think of rooibos as tea’s caffeine-free cousin. Naturally rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, it’s smooth, creamy and gently sweet without a hint of astringency. The rooibos we select is carefully stewarded by our friends to highlight the delicious complexities that make this tea so versatile. Rooibos loves milk, plays nicely with sugar (try it in a latte!) and is just as comfortable hot or iced.
The next time you reach for a cup of tea that includes rooibos, take a moment to ponder how this humble herb has been lovingly cared for and thoughtfully picked to bring refreshment to generations worldwide.
